OXON HILL, Md. — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has won the Conservative Political Action Conference's presidential preference poll.

The overwhelming win is purely symbolic, but reflects the Republican senator's popularity among conservatives who typically hold outsized influence in the GOP's presidential selection process. Paul captured 31 percent of the vote. He won the poll last year as well. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz finished second place with 11 percent, followed by neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

None of the Republicans in the poll have formally entered the 2016 race yet.

The victory was announced Saturday evening as the annual conservative conference wrapped up. Thousands of activists flocked to suburban Washington for the three-day gathering.

Nearly 2,500 hundred activists voted. They were younger and more male than the typical electorate.

Rand Paul Revolution for President in 2016

Rand Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll, beats Marco Rubio

Conservative activists picked libertarian Senator Rand Paul on Saturday as their preferred presidential nominee for 2016, in an early but often unreliable snapshot of the Republican Party's base.

The Kentucky lawmaker, whose father, former U.S. Representative Ron Paul, ran for president three times, topped the annual straw poll taken at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Paul captured 25 percent of the vote, narrowly beating out Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who earned 23 percent. Rick Santorum, a presidential candidate in 2012, finished third and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who was snubbed by conference organizers, came in fourth.

Participants in the three-day gathering are often younger-than-average Republican voters and their preference for Paul reflected the libertarian bent of that voting bloc. More than half of the 2,930 people who cast ballots were between the ages of 18 and 25.

Many attendees sported "Stand with Rand" stickers, intended to show appreciation for the senator's recent 13-hour speech on the floor of the Senate objecting to President Barack Obama's policies regarding the use of military drones.

There were 23 names on this year's ballot. Results of presidential election-year straw polls have proven more accurate indicators of the eventual Republican nominee. Most lawmakers, including Rubio, who addressed the crowd this week, encouraged activists to return to the conservative principles of the Republican Party.

"The GOP of old has grown stale and moss-covered. I don't think we need to name any names, do we? Our party is encumbered by an inconsistent approach to freedom. The new GOP will need to embrace liberty in the economic and the personal sphere," Paul said.

Congressman Ron Paul has something the other candidates envy, which is a profound amount of grassroots support. With over 700 local meetup groups, with around 100,000 members, this fact alone is very impressive and gives him creditability as a major contender. At his peak in 2008, he had doubt those numbers in Meetup Groups. Ron Paul for President - MEETUP GROUPS

This week the Federal Reserve responded to the American people's increased concerns over our monetary policy by presenting new initiatives aimed at enhancing the Fed's transparency and accountability. As someone who has called for more openness from the Fed for over 30 years, I was pleased to see the Fed acknowledge the legitimacy of this need for the economy.

The Federal Reserve controls the flow of money and credit in our economy because Congress has abdicated its responsibility over the nation's currency. This process therefore occurs centrally, and almost completely outside the system of checks and balances. Because of legal tender laws, people are left with no real choice, except to build their lives and futures around this monopoly currency, vulnerable to powerful central bankers. The Founding Fathers intended only gold and silver to be used as currency, however, inch by inch over the decades, this country has backed away from this important restraint. Our money today has no link whatsoever to gold or silver. For many reasons, this is extremely dangerous, and has a lot to do with the boom and bust cycles that have resulted in the crisis in which we find ourselves today.

The Fed is now pledging to reveal to the public more about its economic predictions, and calls this greater transparency. This is little more than window-dressing, at best, utterly useless at worst. Many analysts, especially those familiar with the Austrian school of economics, saw the current economic crisis coming years ago when the Federal Reserve was still telling the American people their policies were as good as gold. So while it might be nice to know what fantasy-infused outlook the Fed has on the economy, I am much more interested in what they are doing as a result of their faulty, haphazard interpretation of data. For instance, what arrangements do they have with other foreign central banks? What the Fed does on that front could very well affect or undermine foreign policy, or even contribute to starting a war.

The first step is to pass legislation I will soon introduce requiring an audit of the Federal Reserve so we can at least get an accurate picture of what is happening with our money. If this audit reveals what I suspect, and Congress has finally had enough, they can also pass my legislation to abolish the Federal Reserve and put control of the economy's lifeblood, the currency, back where it Constitutionally belongs. If Congress refuses to do these two things, the very least they could do is repeal legal tender laws and allow people to choose a different currency in which to operate. If the Fed refuses to open its books to an audit, and Congress refuses to demand this, the people should not be subject to the whims of this secretive and incompetent organization.

Ron Paul holds historic 3rd party press conference

If you cannot stand the liberalism of Mitt Romney and John McCain, there are alternatives. Columnist Ann Coulter predicted that in 2008 if McCain would win, but his presidency will be a disaster, and will leave the Republican Party in shambles, with Republicans in years to come taking a beating in Congressional races. There are alternatives.
